Hello :)
I hope everyone are doing fine. Got another how-to-question, actually, i got two!
1. keys: I have tried a few ways to keep my keys safe, and know where i have them at all times.
I have tired keystring around my neck, keeping them in pockets on my cothes (but what do you do when they are not there?), and keeping them in my purce. I found out that y keeping hte keys on a string around my neck, i ended up making a nuch of wholes in my t-shirt on very uncool places.
How would you keep keys, if only out for a short wile no needing anything like cellphone and stuff, and your clothes don't have pockets?
2. things: I am beginning to get more out of the house again, and in public places such as cafés, shopingcenters, exectra.
Ideas on how to keep personal belongings safe while being out? e.g. whil needing to use bathroom, order more stuff etc.?
We also discussed this before, but the challenge if re-finding tables, is also partually challenging. anyways, tips and tricks .. are nice :)
greetings from Ranveig :)
My purse is my lifeline when it comes to keeping my personal belongings safe when I'm out. I keep my keys in there, my phone, and any other*necessary* items. the key here really, (and no pun intended by the way), is not to bring anything you know you won't need while out. That way, you can store your necessities in something small enough to bring with you everywhere. My purse is big enough to fit everything comfortably, but small enough that I have no problem making sure it never leaves my side. also, make sure you never let someone you don't know hold onto anything for you, not even if they're standing right beside you the whole time.
the airport, and bus or train stations are a little more tricky, but again, make sure you bring your items in a bag that is comfortable enough to keep with you, except your checked bags, of course. Personally, I don't even let whoever is escorting me to my gate hold my things for me, and if they take them without asking me, I will raise hell if necessary. Just a little precaution I take, especially after someone just about forgot my passport in security once. I hope that helps.
Agree. I go out with as little crap as possible and keep everything in my pockets, purse or in a zipper pouch on my guide dog handle. If you leave a table to go to the bathroom, take your stuff with you or leave it with a trusted companion. I have a wrist strap thing on my keys so I can slip them on my wrist briefly for whatever reason. I don't carry them that way, but sometimes I need them available but because of the dog and other stuff in my hands, I can't hold on to them. The wrist thing works great. I know people who use fanny packs to hold their stuff. I suppose it's fine if you don't mind looking like a dork. From a fashion standpoint, fanny packs aren't cool. Some people will try to tell you to get a nice leather fanny pack and convince you that it will look fine. I used to see. Trust me. Fanny packs look dorkalicious on everyone. I don't care what it's made out of. If you don't care about conforming to fashion, then it's an option to consider. Never trust random strangers to hold your stuff or not steal unattended stuff. If you operate from the general presumption that people suck, then you can make sound decisions regarding your stuff while you are out and about. I know that all people do not suck, but I prefer to start at suck and adjust my opinion as needed. Just use good common sense and you'll be fine.
yes. sometimes you have to choose between convenience and fashion. But you can get very fashionable purses and adjust the strap so it isn't too far out of your reach. Personally, I keep my shoulder strap short enough so I can easily reach all the pouches as needed, but long enough that it's out of my way when walking, and performing other tasks with my arms.
i have one of those keyrings with the cord as well, comes in very useful. A little tip if you want to keep track of your keys around the house, put a hook next to the door and always hang your keys there when you're not using them. come in the door, hang them up, go out the door and you need them grab them and in the pocket they go.
As for stuff i carry with me when out and about, my phone is clipped to my belt at all times, and my wallet is in my pocket along with any other items i think i'd need in a situation. If you know you need a certain thing with you at all times try putting it in a coat or light jacket depending on the weather. They also do make more modern pouches to carry stuff that are a little more styleish from what i've been told. if needed i can have my sighted GF help me find some and i can post links to them.
If you're going to use coat pockets to contain your things while you're out and about, I'd recommend getting a coat that has deep pockets with zippers. I can't tell you how many times I've heard horror stories about lost wallets. Great suggestion about putting keys on a hook by the door.
:) thanks all for great replies :)
I realize the trick is to get a bigger purce for me. *smiling* Yes!, lost items from pockets are no fun .. i lost my cellphone like that once, but got it back .. woohoo! (which i did not expect at all)..
when it comes to carying the purse safely, how?
Fannypacks are nice, but i think only for dog-training. :)

Yet another benefit to keeping your shoulder strap on the purse fairly short is that it will always be near your arm. that way, nobody can touch it without you being able to feel it.
You can ask the person who is out the counter to help you find a table.
You can carrey a perse so that nothing gets lots.
You can by a rise band that ha you can put a key ring on.

I wear my keys with my id on my neck with a lanyeard the one I use is from something like tenth grade, still works like a charm! so I hang my four keys on it, my id in a id holder and stuff. and, how does keys ruin your shirt? I don't get how they are suppose to. Unless, you purposefully ruin your clthes by sticking your keys very hard in to your clothes in the way so to ruin them. otherwise keys don't have destructive arms and teeth that bites your shirt so it becomes holely and ragged.
Bring your purse in to the bathroom, hang it on the hooks on your stall, and I personally stick the keys in my bra, still wearing it, but to prevent the keys and the card from going in to the toilet or getting it dirty I just stick it in my shirt so it can't be.
pretty simple if you ask me, and I just ask someone to another table if I need one, or try to remember where my table was if I need the same one.
You could clip your keys to your beltloop if you have one, using one of those caribiners (sp) that hikers use.
As for carrying a purse, I keep my sholder strap long enough so that I can wear it across my body diagonally. Hope that makes sense.
How come it is that chicks will not use their pockets, like us? Now that their pants and shirts and things have pockets, why not? the daughter always says "Daad! Girls don't put things in their pocket!" after I tell her "Just put that in your pocket baby." So you carry around extra bags and things for all of this.
Nothing beats a good cargo pocket, like on our patrol uniforms, second that a regular pants pocket will hold your keys and the works.
I have seen small purses for woman, and have purchased one for a blind friend of mine. This one is black leather, so matches anything.
It has a long strap on it, and you tie a knot in the strap to adjust it for length for your size. It has zipper pockets, as well as open slide pockets. It is fashionable, small so you don't have to every remove it from your body, and the slip pockets are for your phone and things you need to get to easy.
Inside it has places for cards as well.
It is not a product that is hard to find, and many sighted women carry them as well, because its small, but holds your needed items easy.
It is secure, because the strap goes over your head resting on the other sholder from the side you carry it, so hard to snatch and impossible to slip off your body. I suppose if you do a flip, but. Lol
Leo, I must not be a traditional woman because I love my pockets whenever possible. When I was a scout leader for my son's Cubs, the pants with all those pockets were my favorite! lol
As far as shirt pockets, our boobs kinda get in the way there. lol
I do actually when I have pockets available. when I am not wearing miniskirts or skirts in general which never has pockets the ones I've seen, and I hate scorts with a passion. I use to really hate pants too, but since I am up here in northern california for something like over half a year I kind of need them, and I usually do use my pockets. yeah, that's what I figured the last two days, I don't really wanna bring extra baggage to class if I don't need to so I didn't.
I'm also a huge fan of the backpack. Probably not overly stylish but better than a fanny pack. lol
A few more tips. My friend has this thing, it is a small metal cylinder, maybe the size of a fifty cent piece, or an inch and half across for people who don't remember those. It has a pocket clip on the back to hook onto your belt, and a chain comes out of it with a key ring on it. The chain is spring loaded, so you can pul it out and let it go, and it will retract again. You can put practically anything on those, he keeps his keys. I'm not sure where he found it though, but google can tell you I'm sure.
Next, there is a company called sticky holsters. They make holsters for pistols, hense the name, but they also make pouches that are designed to go in your waistband. They can hold keys, a pocket knife, cards, cash, anything relatively small you feel like putting in there. They use the compression of your clothes against your body to stick in place, so its secure, but doesn't require a belt. Also, since its inside your waistband, its out of the way, no one will even know you have it.
Last, about coats. I always keep important things like my cell phone or my keys on an inside coat pocket. First, these pockets are vertical, unlike most outside pocket which are slightly angled. this makes it nearly impossible for things to fall out. Second, its secure from anyone trying to reach in to my pocket to take them.
You'll have to do some searching for a coat that has big enough pockets on the inside. Mine could easily hold a bottle of soda with room to spare.
One thing about coat pockets that I did not learn until getting into the food / restaurant business several years ago:
If you hang your coat up at a public place, you are responsible for the items inside if they get stolen. Meaning if you are at a place with a public coat rack, such as an event, and you hang your coat up yourself, you are responsibe for whatever gets stolen. If a server takes the coat, at a private club for instance, then they are responsible to safeguard whatever is in it.
Not that this is all that common anymore, sounds like something from my father's generation more than something we experience now, but it can occasionally happen.
Basic rule of thumb: always keep the mobile devices / phones on your person like you do your wallet.
a backpack seems to bulky for me. I also really like this box purse thingy this person gave to me. nevere seen it ever before but it's a purse thing but it's on this mettle chain. it's like a hard box and there's many colors so you where this chain on your shoulders and this box thing with leathery cloth surrounds it. it has this mettle clasp that has these big balls that like go behind one another. and you open it by pushing them apart. this thing is about something like 5 to 7 inches long not even a feet and about 3 to 4 inches wide. . and about 2 inches deep. so enough to hold like a few bills, a cellphone, and one or two other small things. pretty handy, don't know where she got it though brought it to go shopping last time though.
I have a purse similar to the one Wayne bought for his friend.
to clarify, it isn't the same thing as a fanny pack. however, it's small enough for me to keep everything I need in it, and secure enough that, as was said in another post, I'd feel the pull if someone tried to take it.
There are some cute back pack purses out there. I have a brown leather one I got at JC Penny. Love it!!!
Plus boys, this is a woman? She needs some cuteness to her outfit. She can't be reaching inside her skirt to get her money. Lol
Last pockets full of stuff makes an outfit looks not so nice. Even me a guy, I don't like to much stuff in my pockets. I've got a wallet, that holds my phone, a few cards, and money. Keys in the other.
I have a nice leather stone mountain purse. it has several zipper pockets which is very convenient, and its big enough to hold my phone, wallit, keys and a couple other things that are small. and, the strap is long enough where I can put it diagonally across my shoulders, which I like too.
I have one of those keychains you can clip to a belt loop on a pair of jeans ifnecessary. It's perfect for me since I don't carry many keyys around for obvious reasons. No need for car keys, but I have the key to my apartment plus a spare key to my folks' [lace in case I have to go house sit for them when they're on vacation, and a key to a lockbox that I keep important paperwork in. Usually that keychain stays in my coat pocket but I sometimes take it out and clip it to my pants when I know I'll be in a situation where they could possibly fall out of my coat.
wow :) lots of messages here :) thanks alot!
Well, note taken of all the good ideas. :)
I do use a small purse usually, and i do use my jeans-pockets for cellphone and things... i guess my idea is the closer to the body, the more secure? ;)
Those "keep things inside your wasteband" thigns are pretty neat untill you need what's inside there .. :)
I have found that aster i stoppend using the key-string around my neck, my shirts has definately gotten less holes in them, so I seriously beleive that was the case. I dont know if it was the chain iself or the keys that did it. :) but it appeared to become more of a problem when winter came and the clothes that went over the string became thicker and heavier. :)
again, everyine thanks for iideas! and i'll keep a few of the other ones in mind too!
mmm.. and i love my lil backpack for grocery-shopping ;) :)
